The Importance of Your Authentic Story (and some resources to help you tell it).
How to Tell Your Story Online (Even When You're Still Figuring It Out)
It’s Okay to Be in the Middle of the Story
If you’re a creator, entrepreneur, or someone dreaming of a more aligned life and business, you’ve probably heard this before:
“Just be authentic!”
But how do we actually do that?
How do we show up and tell our story when we’re in the messy middle? When we’re tired, overwhelmed, unsure, or healing?
The truth is — storytelling isn’t about always having the polished ending. It’s about showing up with a clear “why” and sharing what you do know: your lived experiences, your values, your purpose.
Whether you’re participating in the 30 Days of Authentic Storytelling Challenge or simply want to connect more deeply with your audience, this post will walk you through the core steps of meaningful storytelling — even when it’s imperfect.
Start with Your Why
✨ Why do you do what you do?
Your story starts here. Whether you’re building a wellness brand, launching a product, or sharing a message close to your heart, your “why” is the anchor that guides your audience to understand your mission.
A beautiful example is Sarah, founder of Blueland. Her passion for reducing single-use plastics is at the heart of her story. She’s not just selling eco-friendly products — she’s telling the story of building a safer, cleaner world for her family.
Your why doesn’t have to be earth-shattering. It just has to be real. Grounded. Lived.
Embrace Imperfect Vulnerability
Authenticity isn’t the same as oversharing. It’s about sharing the truth of your journey — especially the part that hasn’t been tied with a perfect bow.
Share the moment you didn’t feel ready. Share what scared you. Share what you learned when things didn’t go to plan.
This is where trust is built.
When brands “build in public,” they invite their community into the process — and that builds resonance. That kind of transparency becomes the heartbeat of connection.
Share with Consistency
The golden rule: consistency creates trust.
You don’t need to post every day. You don’t need to show up on every platform. But you do need to keep showing up.
Create a rhythm — whether it’s weekly emails, monthly storytelling challenges, or consistent check-ins on your favorite platform. Let your people feel like they’re part of your journey, not just observers of it.
A beautiful example? Sam from Mayfair. She started by simply sharing about mental health on Instagram. One post turned into a movement. Her audience connected so deeply, it evolved into a clothing line. And it was all built from consistency, intention, and staying true to her message.
Structure Your Story Like a Journey
Think of your storytelling as a narrative arc:
The Before — Who were you? What was your old belief system or identity?
The Turning Point — What shifted? What challenged or changed you?
The After (or the Now) — Where are you now? What are you learning? What message are you carrying forward?
When people hear your story in this structure, it gives them something to follow, something to relate to, and something to cheer for.
A Peek Inside the 30-Day Authentic Storytelling Challenge
Even if you’re not inside Out of Office Club (yet 😉), you can still use this structure to tell your story over time. Here's how we break it down inside the challenge:
Week 1: Who I Am
How has your sense of self evolved over time?
What’s the difference between the “old me” and the “new me”?
What would you tell your younger self today?
Week 2: My Experiences
What pivotal moments have shaped your journey?
What challenges helped you grow?
How did your values come into focus?
Week 3: My Why
What cause, belief, or mission drives you?
What kind of future are you building?
How does your business or work reflect that?
Week 4: My How
How do you actually do what you do?
What are your daily rituals, tools, and habits?
What makes your process unique?
Human Design + Storytelling? Yes, Please.
We’re also layering in Human Design to personalize your content strategy even further. This helps you lean into your natural strengths and communicate in a way that feels effortless and true to you.
Real Talk: The Rule of Seven
Worried that you’re repeating yourself too much?
Here’s the thing: people need to hear a message at least seven times before it really sticks.
So go ahead, repeat your story. Repeat the transformation. Repeat your why.
Tell the same story from different angles — as a Reel, a carousel, a newsletter, a voice note. Let it land, slowly and deeply, over time.
A Final Word on Rest, Resonance, and the Real You
This episode — this post — was recorded and written in the middle of being sick, on the heels of emotional moments in the collective, while the world feels a little off-kilter.
And yet: showing up anyway (gently, in your way) is powerful.
It’s okay to slow down. It’s okay to rest. And it’s more than okay to be in-process.
Show up imperfectly. Tell your story your way. Let your audience fall in love with the real you.
